Retrograde motion is an optical illusion caused by differences in the planets’ orbital speed. Planets also grow brighter or dimmer as they move through the sky. There are three types of retrograde motion in astronomy. In retrograde motion each planet seems to slow down at times, then move in reverse, or retrograde, before resuming its course. Those in the opposite direction are called retrograde.
